Polish Genealogy

Polish Genealogy is rather more difficult than in the USA or UK, however one major benefit is that the former Communist Governments did create a lot of paperwork connected with families and their movements. Unfortunately pre the end of the second world war there were so many changes of government, boundaries and other upheavals that many older records do not exist.

However there are many sites that can assist you in your search for your heritage.

Ancestry.com - Although there is a membership charge this site is the best place to start, particularly if you are located in the USA. Probably the largest collection of Polish records in one place, some of them free.

Polishroots - Free site with some good information on Ships Records and Ellis Island

Polishroots Black Book - Interesting for any research in Poland during the 1939-45 War.

Newspaper Archives.com - This site is useful regarding arrivals into the USA via Ellis Island and local news.

Polish Genealogical Society of America - Interesting site although lacks some of the detailed information available in other sites. Information about where the archives are rather than direct searches.
